How It All Began

The Packers and Eagles first locked horns back in 1933. The Packers won that first game 35-9.

The 1960 NFL Championship: A Game-Changer

Now, this is where things get really interesting. Picture this: It’s December 26, 1960, at Franklin Field in Philly. It’s freezing cold, and the Packers are facing off against the Eagles for the NFL Championship.

I wasn’t there (obviously). The Eagles, coached by Buck Shaw, were the underdogs against Vince Lombardi’s powerhouse Packers. But guess what? The Eagles pulled off a 17-13 victory!

This game was huge, not just for the teams but for the whole league. It was the only playoff game Vince Lombardi ever lost. Can you imagine the pressure?

Quarterback Showdowns

Over the years, we’ve seen some epic quarterback battles in this rivalry. From Bart Starr vs. Norm Van Brocklin in the early days to the Brett Favre vs. Donovan McNabb showdowns of the ’90s and 2000s.

I’ll never forget watching Favre and McNabb duke it out. Those games were like watching two gunslingers in the Wild West.

Fourth and 26

Every Packers-Eagles game seems to have at least one moment that leaves you speechless. But there’s one that stands out: Fourth and 26.

It was January 11, 2004. Playoff game. Eagles are down by 3, facing fourth and 26 with just over a minute left. McNabb somehow completes a pass to Freddie Mitchell for a first down. The Eagles went on to win in overtime.

Players Who Wore Both Jerseys

Here’s a fun fact: some players have suited up for both teams. The most famous? Reggie White.
White was an absolute beast for the Eagles from 1985 to 1992. Then he joined the Packers and helped them win a Super Bowl.

Coaching Connections

And it’s not just players that have crossed over. Remember when Andy Reid was an assistant coach for the Packers before becoming the Eagles’ head coach?

Reid’s influence on both teams was huge. He brought a lot of what he learned in Green Bay to Philly before heading to Kansas City.

David vs. Goliath Moments

There have been some major upsets over the years. Remember 2013? The Packers were heavily favored, but the Eagles came out swinging and won 27-13 at Lambeau Field.

Packers Trivia - Just for Fun

Now it’s time to test your knowledge of Packers / Eagles history. Here are one or two potentially related trivia questions for you. Be sure to look for the factoid beneath the answer.

Who was nicknamed the “Minister of Defense”?

Wrong!  The answer is Reggie White.

Correct!  Reggie White

In addition to being an ordained minister, Reggie White was also the most valuable defensive player in NFL history according to Pro Football Reference (tied with Ray Lewis). White was Defensive Player of the Year twice, once as a Packer and once as an Eagle. “The Minister of Defense” retired #1 on the all-time sacks list with 198 sacks from 1985 to 2000.

What number did the Packers retire in honor of Reggie White?

Wrong!  The answer is 92.

Correct!  92

Reggie White is the only player to have his jersey number retired by two NFL teams – the Packers and the Philadelphia Eagles. His alma mater, the University of Tennessee, also retired #92. His legendary “hump move” routinely left offensive linemen in his wake, allowing him to rack up 198 sacks in 232 games over his career, including 3 sacks in Super Bowl XXXI.
